GRADING

To more precisely define the difference in condition between models we have expanded the commonly used condition criterias. We have just taken the commonly referred to "C"-system and added a suffix to more precisely grade the car or box.  The purpose of expanding the grades is to allow for more precise description of condition. This has worked very well in the rare coin market, where it is now a well proven system. However, grading will always be a subjective art in the eye of the beholder. Hopefully the table below will more clearly define the condition of the models. The grading system is a work in progress and we welcome input from anyone interested.

Of note is that very few models would get the highest C10.10 rating, since almost every model would have a blemish or two leaving the production line. Common sense has to be used when for example rating a car with a C10.6 body, but dented bottom plate. This condition rating system is probably already taking this issue further than most collectors or dealers care to go, but if model car collecting is following lead of other collectibles such as stamps or coins a more comprehensive grading system is needed.

As you can see the rating levels do not go .1 to .10 for each major rating category (C5-C10). This rating system is a work in progress and will be perfected and more detailed over time. The C10 and C9 categories include models that virtually never saw play and were handled very carefully. The C8 category include the very carefully played with models. The C7 category show significant paint loss, but otherwise a straight model. The C6 category includes dented cars and cars with missing fixed parts. The C5 category include the cars or partial cars that are at best only good for spare parts.

C10.10 An absolutely perfect model with no blemishes and no manufacturing faults
C10.9 A near perfect model with no more than two dull spots in paint or on chrome or other factory blemishes
C10.8 A near perfect model with no more than three dull spots in paint or chrome or other factory blemishes
C10.7 A near perfect model with no more than four dull spots in paint or chrome or other factory blemishes
C10.6 A near perfect model with no more than five dull spots in paint or chrome or other factory blemishes
C10.5 A near perfect model with no more than six dull spots in paint or chrome or other factory blemishes
C10.4 A near perfect model with no more than seven dull spots in paint or chrome or other factory blemishes

C8.7 An excellent model which displays perfect from a distance as a whole with five or six larger paint chips in addition to some pin head size paint chips, only the slightest wear on raised parts.

  The C7 Category includes very good cars that shows playwear but are otherwise intact
