A Little History -

Stamps of the same design as the 1851-57 issues were perforated 15 1/2 to facilitate their separation. The printer, Toppan, Carpenter & Company delivered the first officially perforated stamps, the three cent type I (25) Washingtons, to the Government on Feb. 24, 1857. Prior to this issue there were machine perforated stamps such as the "Chicago perfs." made by Dr. E.W. hadey; these were unofficial.
